    The Tradie Bible

Everything they don't teach you in trade school. Real advice to help you earn respect, look after your gear, and keep more of your cash.

    The Golden Rules of Site

15 Minutes Early is On Time

If start time is 7:00 AM, you should be out of your car, boots on, and ready to go by 6:45 AM. Nothing pisses off a boss more than a late apprentice.

    Stay Off Your Phone

Keep it in your pocket unless you're on smoko or taking photos of your work. Scrolling TikTok on the clock is a fast track to getting a warning.

    Ask Questions (Once)

It's better to ask a stupid question than make a costly mistake. But carry a notepad—write down the answer so you don't have to ask twice.

    Always Look Busy

If you've finished your task, grab a broom. A clean site is a safe site, and a sweeping apprentice is a working apprentice.

    Tool Care 101

    • 1Engrave Everything: Tools go "missing" on big sites. Get an engraver or a brightly colored paint pen and mark every single tool you own.
    • 2Don't Lend What You Can't Lose: If you lend a tool to another tradie, track it down before you leave site. Nobody will look after your gear as well as you do.
    • 3Clean Your Gear: Wipe down your tools at the end of the week. WD-40 on your pliers, keep your chisels sharp, and don't leave power tools in the rain.

When You Mess Up (Because You Will)

Own it immediately. Do not try to hide a mistake, bury it, or fix it secretly if you don't know how. It always comes out, and it's always worse when it does.

Bring a solution. If you cut a board too short or drill through the wrong pipe, go to the boss and say: "I messed up X, but I've already measured a new piece / turned off the water. How do you want me to proceed?"

Learn from it. You're an apprentice; you are expected to make mistakes. You are NOT expected to make the same mistake twice.

    Look After Your Rig

    Deafness Isn't Cool

Wear your ear protection. Tinnitus (constant ringing in your ears) will ruin your sleep for the rest of your life. Same goes for safety glasses—you only get two eyes.

    Stay Hydrated

Working on site in the summer heat will drain you faster than you think. Keep a massive water jug nearby and drink constantly to stay sharp.

    Knee Pads Are Essential

If you spend hours on the floor, buy decent knee pads. 40-year-old you will thank you.

    Lift Properly

Don't ego-lift bags of cement or heavy timber. Ask for a team lift. A blown disc in your back at 22 will end your career before it starts.

    The Apprentice Finance Trap

Do not finance a $60k ute on a first-year wage. This is the most common mistake apprentices make. A shiny new Ranger looks great until you're eating 2-minute noodles for dinner and can't afford decent tools because your loan repayments are eating 50% of your pay.

Buy a cheap, reliable runaround van or ute for cash. Upgrade when you're qualified and earning big money. Invest your early cash into high-quality tools that will actually help you make money.

    Tax Time Basics

We kept this in because it's too important to skip. Don't leave money on the table at EOFY.

    • Keep Every Receipt: Take a photo of them and save them in a folder on your phone. Tool Collective emails you a digital receipt automatically.
    • Immediate Deductions: Tools under $300 can usually be claimed immediately. Most of your hand tools will fall into this category.
    • Claim Protective Gear: Steel caps, safety glasses, and hi-vis are also deductible.

*Disclaimer: We are tradies, not accountants. Always consult a registered tax agent or the ATO website for advice specific to your situation.
